The Department of History is one of the three departments within Chongqing University’s Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Science. With a vibrant and dynamic community of over 15 scholars, the department offers undergraduate and graduate studies in major aspects of Chinese history.
Our department houses a diverse group of faculty members who specialize in a range of research areas, including ancient and modern Chinese history, as well as specialized fields such as Sino-foreign relations, economic and social history, and urban history. With a long history dating back to 1929, our department approaches the study of history through the evaluation and analysis of historical data and documents, with the goal of preparing our students to "learn from the past, understand the present, and guide the future." Here, we provide an environment where students and researchers can pursue these goals while exploring not only Chinese history, but the histories of the various regions that make up our world.
The department has recently established three research centers: Center for the Society and Culture of Yangtze River Basin, Center for Chinese Intellectual History, and Center for Twentieth-Century Chinese Politics and Society. These centers conduct cutting-edge and cross-disciplinary teaching and research. Within these academic communities, graduate students and third- and fourth-year undergraduate majors can benefit not only from the guidance of their supervisors, but also from participating in reading groups, academic talks, workshops, and conferences organized by the clusters.
