On the morning of April 16, 2023, the Opening and Honorary Dean Appointment Ceremony of Chongqing University Liberal Arts Academy were held in the lecture hall of the Comprehensive Building of Huxi Campus.

Wang Shuxin, President of Chongqing University and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Lin Jianhua, former President of Chongqing University and director of Future Education Center of Peking University, Professor Gan Yang, Director of General Education Committee of Tsinghua University, Professor Xie Shi, Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University, and Professor Li Meng, dean of Yuanpei College of Peking University, attended the ceremony and jointly unveiled the plaque of Liberal Arts Academy. Relevant persons in charge of the Party Office and School Office of Chongqing University, Undergraduate School and other functional departments, as well as members of the leadership team of Liberal Arts College, representatives of teachers and students attended the ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Li Zhengliang, dean of Undergraduate College.

President Wang Shuxin presented the Honorary Dean’s letter of appointment to Professor Lin Jianhua. He delivered a speech on behalf of the school, warmly congratulating the establishment of the Liberal Arts Academy, expressing sincere gratitude to all experts for their long-term support to the school’s development, and expressing his heartfelt thanks to Professor Lin Jianhua, the former president, for his willingness to be the honorary Dean of the Academy.

Wang Shuxin pointed out that during President Lin Jianhua's administration of Chongqing University, he made a series of far-sighted plans with far-reaching influence, supporting the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Science and the Liberal Arts College in 2011 and 2012, planning to promote the revitalization of the school's basic liberal arts. After ten years of development, it has now formed a good situation in which the development of basic liberal arts disciplines, the cultivation of professional talents, and global general education have been combined, supporting and promoting each other. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Liberal Arts College, successful experience and good reputation of its talent cultivation are summed up and the Liberal Arts Academy is established, which marks a new milestone in the cultivation of basic liberal arts talents of Chongqing University. He said that the old president, Professor Lin Jianhua, is highly respected, and has a special love for liberal arts education and high hopes. He believed that under the inspiration of his spirit, the Liberal Arts Academy will develop more rapidly, the students of Liberal arts will be more vigorous. He expects Liberal Arts Academy to lead the school to further deepen the reform of talent cultivation system, and to continue to establish good indoctrination, preach good morals in the southwestern region and lead the fashion of the times.

After the ceremony, Professor Lin Jianhua gave a wonderful speech on the topic of "Higher Education in the Age of Open Knowledge ". He pointed out that with the development of technology and the popularization of higher education, universities no longer monopolize knowledge activities, and we cannot narrowly define the way and connotation of education by purely classroom lectures, classical reading, and professional knowledge transfer. Based on the difference between "explicit" and "tacit" knowledge, he proposed that teaching by word and example, labor and aesthetic education, social interaction, and life experience and training are all "education", and they are especially important and most extensive as tacit knowledge. The ultimate goal of education is to let students "Learn to Be Human", and higher education today should pay more attention to tacit education, construct a broad environment, combine scenarios and technologies, help students open the boundaries of subjects, learning and schools, and release their minds and inner potentials and so on.

The teachers and students listened attentively to the report and felt Professor Lin's rigorous spirit of governance, his ardent concern for student’s growth, his outlook and planning for the future of higher education, and his wishes and expectations for general education and the "Academy system". As "the first lesson of the Academy", the whole report was impressive and aroused heated discussions among the teachers and students.
