International Summer School
Discover China in Chongqing:
Urban Landscapes, Historical Heritages, and Industrialization in Southwest China

Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants should have an interest in Chinese culture, history, and modernization, with a desire to further explore the diversity of China’s social and economic development as well as the unique urban landscape of Chongqing and the Southwest region. Current undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Knowledge of Chinese is not mandatory; however, preference will be given to applicants with a solid foundation in the language.

Language Proficiency Score: Submit your Chinese or English language proficiency test results, if available.

Courses:
1. Ancient Culture and Historical Trajectories in Southwest China: Explore the evolution of ancient cultures in Southwest China, tracing their development through history and understanding their influence on the region’s identity and heritage.
2. Modern Industrial Layout and Urban Transformation: Delve into the modernization of Chongqing, examining its industrial planning and the ongoing urban regeneration efforts that bridge its rich history with contemporary progress.
3. Cultural Diversity and Community Building in Southwest China: Study the vibrant cultural diversity of Southwest China, highlighting the harmonious coexistence of various ethnic groups and their contributions to regional unity and identity
4. Chongqing’s International Relations and the Belt and Road Initiative: Investigate Chongqing’s strategic role in China’s global outreach, focusing on its growing international partnerships and contributions to the Belt and Road Initiative.

Field Visits:
Participants will gain hands-on insights through carefully curated visits to significant sites, along with introductive lectures.
1. 816 Nuclear Project Relics: A remarkable piece of industrial history reflecting China’s engineering achievements.
2. Western Logistics Park: A hub showcasing modern logistics and trade development, central to Chongqing’s role in the Belt and Road Initiative.
3. Seres Smart Factory: A state-of-the-art manufacturing facility illustrating Chongqing’s advances in smart technologies and sustainable industries.
4. Dazu Rock Carvings: A UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its exquisite Buddhist sculptures and rich cultural symbolism.
5. Diaoyu Fortress: A historic fortress known for its pivotal role in resisting Mongol invasions, embodying resilience and ingenuity.

The summer school program provides comprehensive on-the-ground services, including:
Accommodation and Meals: Comfortable lodging and curated dining experiences featuring local cuisine.
Local Transportation: Convenient transportation for all field visits and local travel during the program.

Course Fees: Full access to all lectures, workshops, and educational materials.
Participants are responsible for their own round-trip transportation to and from Chongqing.
