Prof. Guangyi Li Appointed Adjunct Professor of Chinese Studies at Maynooth University

Dr. Guangyi Li, Professor of Chinese and world literature, currently serving as Vice Dean of the Liberal Arts College at Chongqing University, has been appointed Adjunct Professor of Chinese Studies at Maynooth University, Ireland.



 



Prof. Li’s research spans Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Comparative and World Literature, Science Fiction, Utopian Studies, and Utopianism. His appointment is expected to strengthen Chongqing University’s  partnership with at Maynooth University. This collaboration will foster joint initiatives in research, teaching, and staff and student exchanges.


As part of the partnership, Prof. Li will deliver both online and in-person lectures to at MU students and play a pivotal role in advancing academic cooperation between the two institutions. His expertise in Chinese and comparative literature will enrich the academic experience at Maynooth University, providing students with valuable opportunities to engage with diverse scholarly traditions and global research conversations.


Liberal Arts College at Chongqing University: Founded in October 2012, the Liberal Arts College at Chongqing University is dedicated to liberal arts education, offering broad-based, small-scale, and high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The college emphasizes transcending disciplinary boundaries to cultivate outstanding talents who are well-versed in both ancient and modern knowledge, combining deep understanding of Chinese traditions with Western thought. It is recognized as a leading center for liberal arts education in western China.


Guangyi Li, B.A. (2004) Peking University, M.A. (2007) Tsinghua University, Ph.D. (2013) UCLA., is Professor of Chinese and world literature, Director of the Center for Science Fiction and Techno-Humanities, and Vice Dean of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, Chongqing University. Particularly renowned for his extensive research in science fiction literature and culture, he is interested in various areas, including modern and contemporary Chinese literature, world literature theory, Sino-foreign literary relations, and utopianism. His scholarly articles are published in leading academic journals such as Literary Review, Modern Chinese Literature Studies, Chinese Comparative Literature, Science Fiction Studies, and Utopian Studies. Li has also edited several anthologies including X Ways to Interpretations of The Three-Body Problem and Chinese Science Fiction Literature Series. In 2018, his article "Chinese King of Electricity: science, technology and the late Qing imagination of world order" earned him the prestigious Jamie Bishop Memorial Award from IAFA, making him the first Chinese scholar to win this honor. In 2023, he published the first science fiction textbook for Chinese higher education, titled Introduction to Science Fiction, and was honored with the inaugural "Best Teacher" award at the Fishing Fortress Science Fiction Awards.
